March 3: Colloquium lecture features social justice advocate
FREDERICK, Md.—The third event in Hood College’s annual spring Colloquium Series will take place March 3 at 7 p.m. in the College’s Whitaker Campus Center.
Eli Clare, author and social justice advocate, will give a talk entitled Bodies as Home: Notes on Cure, Disability and Natural Worlds. He combines storytelling and critical analysis, disability politics and environmental activism to examine the unrelenting desire to cure disability.
Clare, who suffers from cerebral palsy, addresses disability, gender, race, class and sexuality in his work. He speaks, teaches and facilitates at conferences, community events and colleges throughout the United States and Canada. He identifies as genderqueer and as a trans man.
This year’s colloquium theme, Home, focuses on the many components that define a sense of place and home and, in turn, shape individual and cultural identities. The series is funded in part by a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant.
The final spring colloquium event, a lecture in Spanish by Catalan author Maria Barbal on April 6, will also focus on the complex notion of home.
